Personal Reflection

Together for a Healthier Future

I am passionate about increasing oral health awareness and access to care, particularly for underserved populations, as I continue my journey in dental hygiene. My goal is to break down cultural barriers that often lead people to overlook their dental hygiene. I’ve seen my family prioritize dental care only when serious issues arise, and I am determined to change that by educating others on the importance of regular oral health practices.
A pivotal moment in my journey was working with my sister, my first patient. Initially, her oral health was concerning—her gums bled during brushing, and her condition was classified as moderate. However, within six months of committing to a routine of proper brushing, regular flossing, and professional check-ups, her status improved significantly, and the bleeding stopped completely. This experience reinforced my belief in the transformative power of effective dental care and deepened my commitment to positively impacting individual health and the broader community.
Central to my mission is the understanding that everyday habits significantly impact oral health. One of my main interests lies in helping others recognize the vital link between nutrition and oral hygiene. Simple dietary choices can strengthen teeth and gums; for instance, foods rich in calcium and vitamin D are essential, while sugary snacks and acidic foods can contribute to cavities and erosion (American Dental Association, 2023). Dairy products, in particular, are beneficial for gum health due to their high calcium and phosphorus content, which are essential for maintaining strong teeth and bones (Shkembi & Huppertz, 2023). Many Vietnamese people consider milk and dairy products such as yogurt and cheese as foods only for children, the elderly, and the sick. In fact, milk and cheese are both foods with high nutritional value, helps reduce acidity in the mouth, and helps prevent tooth decay (Shkembi & Huppertz, 2023). However, in Vietnam, milk has become familiar because it is easy to access, while cheese is rarely used, partly due to lack of habit, partly because of a lack of understanding of their nature. To address this knowledge gap, it is crucial to educate the community about the positive effects of dairy on oral health. I am thinking of organizing workshops that explain the role of dairy in gum health and offer recipes incorporating these products can be highly effective. Additionally, creating educational resources in Vietnamese that highlight the benefits of dairy and suggest alternatives for those who are lactose intolerant is essential.
In addition to nutrition, I want to highlight the importance of flossing, a practice often undervalued. I aim to develop straightforward manuals detailing proper flossing techniques and their critical role in preventing gum disease. Many people assume brushing is sufficient, but regular flossing is vital for gum health. My goal is to encourage the incorporation of flossing into everyone’s daily routine. Knowing how to choose the right dental products is equally important. I will educate individuals on reading toothpaste labels, focusing on beneficial ingredients like fluoride and warning against harmful additives. I’ll also provide clear recommendations for selecting toothbrushes—soft bristles are generally best for protecting gums, and ergonomic handles can enhance brushing efficiency. Routine dental appointments are important, but everyday maintenance, including gentle brushing techniques, is essential. I plan to create instructional videos demonstrating proper brushing and flossing methods, suitable for all ages.
I understand that many people face financial barriers when it comes to dental care. That’s why I want to work with local organizations to offer free or affordable dental check-ups. I believe everyone deserves access to quality care, no matter their financial situation. I will also advocate for better dental insurance options and preventive programs to ensure vital services are available to those in need.
My background as a Vietnamese American gives me a unique perspective in this field. Being bilingual helps me connect with patients from different backgrounds. I know that cultural differences can affect how people view dental treatment. That's why I am committed to creating educational resources that speak to various communities. By being culturally sensitive, I can better meet the specific needs of each group and help everyone feel comfortable and informed about their oral health.
Through these efforts, I am driven by my passion for oral health and the belief that meaningful, actionable steps can lead to real change. I strive to improve access to dental care for all by providing information on nutrition, effective brushing techniques, and choosing appropriate dental products. Small changes can lead to significant improvements in overall health and well-being. Together, we can create a stronger foundation for oral health and wellness, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to achieve a healthier smile and a brighter future.
